In the Supremo Court charges of conspiracy to defraud against Andrew Gibson Taylor, ex-timekeeper in the employ of the cargo department of tho Union Steam Ship Company, was heard. It was alleged that Taylor took advantage of his position to falsify timesheets by entering thereon four fictitious names, in respect of which wages totalling £154 18s lOd were paid on behalf of the. company, apparently through the offices of the Waterside Labour Employment Association.
The jury, after a retirement of 90 minutes, returned a verdict of not guilty.
Mr Justice Recd: “Have you any objection to telling me the grounds on which you brought in your verdict?”
The foreman (Mr Lack): “On the system of paying out the wages.” Mr Justice Reed said that the only view he could take was that the jury had not understood the case. He suggested that in future, when such cases were being considered, the Crown should apply for a special jury. Mr Macassey (Crown Prosecutor) replied that he considered the case an extremely plain one —easily understood. In future he would apply for a special jury.
