NEW ZEALAND NEWS.

PAN PACIFIC CONGRESS. PROPOSAL TURNED DOWN. DUNEDIN, August 9. At the Pan Pacific Congress, held in Honolulu last year, it was unanimously decided that the next meeting should be held in New Zealand if the Government of the Dominion would extend thb invitation to that effect.

The gathering was timed to coincide with the next meeting of the Australasian Association for tho Advancement of Science, which is to be held in Wellington in January, 1923, and it wousd have attracted scientific’ delegates from most countries bordering on the Pacific.

The New Zealand Government lias turned down the proposal, and the consequence is that the Congress will be invited to meet in Japan, where too authorities are much alive to scientific! advancement. A COMPENSATION CLAIM. GISBORNE, August 8.

At the Arbitration Court judgment was given for defendant in a claim for compensation of £5OOO made by Harry Dujany, against the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Company.

The ’ case presented unusual features. Plaintiff was engaged in general work, and was sent to tho blacksmiths’ shop as a striker. While using a hammer he felt a pain in the chest, accompanied by dizziness. Since then ho has been unable to do anything but light work.

Tho medical evidence was conflicting. There was general agreement that plaintiff’s heart iwas affected, but conflict as to whether the condition whs duo to a sudden strain.

The Court discussed the medical testimony with Dr. Fitchett, of Dunedin, and states that there is strong probability that plaintiff's heart was in an unhealthy condition previously, the presumption being that the hammer found the trouble out, but did not cause it.
