IN THE COURTS.

BOOKMAKER FINED £25. Per Press Association—Copyright..] CHRISTCHURCH, t his day. William James Royan, a carrier, pleaded guilty in the Magistrates Court to a charge of bookmaking at the Metropolitan Trotting club’s meeting on Feb. 12th. c The police gave evidence that accused was running a double chart on two of the events. Counsel said that accused had been making bets in small amounts with friends but was not an habitual bookmaker in view of the recent cases elsewhere. Had he elected to go before a jury he would probably be acquitted but pleaded guilty to save trouble. The Magistrate (Mr McCarthy) said he would take into consideration the previous good character of the accused, his military service, and the fact that he had pleaded guilty and given an assurance that he would not again engage in the occupation of a bookmaker, and imposed a fine of £25, in default three months’ imprisonment.
