COMMERCIAL.

.WEEKLY, MAEKET REPOItT. (Timaru lierald). Quito a lot of business could have been done on tiie lo.al markets this week had the. necessary wheat been offering, but it was not. The surplus which should havo existed had the (Jovernment statistics been correct, is still being looked for in vain. It is known that a good many farmers are stdl holding wheat, but no trace can be found of anything like the quantity that there should be had there been a yield of seven million bushels as the statistics showed. The farmers who still hold wheat are showing no inclination to sell, and the- mills are finding it almost impossible to get supplies at a reasonable price. A few sales have been made during the week. A parcel of Velvet changed hands at 5s 9d, Keel Chaff at 5s 7d, and Tuscan at 5s sd, all delivered. quotations are—Velvet 5s 9d to 5s lOd, Tuscan os 5d to 5s Gd, and Hunters 5s 7d delivered. Some smutty wheat has been sold at 4s 2d and 4s 3d f.0.b., s.i., while fowl wheat is worth 5s on trucks. Oats are in short supply, and very few are offering. B. Gartons were sold yesterday at 2s 9Jd on trucks, country stations, and another line of very nicemilling oats at 2s 11-J-d on trucks. The season for old potatoes is prae-

ticaWjV over, hut prices are still high, £lO Ids at country stations being paid yesterday. This price is not expected to hold for any length of time as now potatoes in Australia are now quoted at £fl 10s f.o.h Sydney. Moreover weather conditions have improved in the Auckland district, with the result that larger supplies of new potatoes are now coming on tho market there. CUUISTCHRCJI. PRODUCE MARKET. (Per Press Association. CHRISTCHUIUTI, Nov. 17. Tho wheat market is very firm, as there is a keen demand which, connected with the fact that supplies are difficult to obtain, makes the position acute. The rise in tho price of wheat lias brought it above tho level of the price of flour, and millers consider there should he an advance in the latter, but the keen competition in the flout .market evidently prevents this being brought about. There is practically no wheat held in merchants' stores, and very little is coming forward from the. growers. There 's no change in oats, hut there has been a little more inquiry for chaff,

Tho potato market _is somewhat easier, and tho price is just what growers can obtain.

THE HOME MARKETS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assii. Received 9.5 p.m., Nov. 17th. LONDON, Nov. 16. Butter is very firm with a limited Mipply. The top makers are unwilling to sell and business is very limited. Moan quotations are: —Sixty-fours 61d, super sixties 60d, common sixties 59d, fifty-sixes 45Jd, fifties 36M, fortysixes 31 d, forties 29£d. Wheat, is firmer and no cargoes are offering.
