“ Fritz” Cycle Road Race.

WON EASILY BY YESBERG.,

A large crowd witnessed the start of the “Fritz” cycle road race yesterday afternoon from the Catholic Church, Timaru Road, The course ,was to Makikihi and hack. Motor'cars had been placed along each side of the road, and ropes passed along between, ensuring a free start for the cyclists and a safe and clear run in for the finish. The finish was witnessed by several hundred spectators. The result was as follows;

Yesberg (7miu), 62miu 55sec., 1 Howe (smin), Glmin 22scc., 2 Hawkins (fimin), 63min 2sec., 3

Fastest time—McMurtrie (58min oOsec). This was from scratch, and Sauer aUid White, the other scratch men, took one and two seconds longer respectively. The scratch men did not make the pace expected of them. Yesberg was “all out”, however, and had the road practically to himself all the way home from Makikihi, winning ow he liked.

Mr 'E. J. Atwill acted as starter, Messrs C, Hodges, N. L. Thomas and W. G. Russell as judges, and Messrs J. King and T. Dunstan as timekeepers.

There is a scarcity of shearers in the Marlborough district. Substantial reductions on watches, clocks, and jewellery at Walker’s.... During four weeks, eight persons in Whangerci wore declared to bo of unsound mind.

There was a numerous attendance at the organ recital by Mr Davis Hunt at St. Augustine’s Church last evening. The recital was musical treat. A full report and comments will appear in next issue. Wilce’s All Blue was first home, taking 4hrs 29min 30sec; C. E. Butcher’s Gold Lace (4.58.30) 2nd; J. Wilcc’s Blue Light (5.5.30) 3rd. The next race will be flown from Woodville (North Island) next Thursday. Buy your Christmas and New Year presents cheap and good at Walker’s. The Progressive Euchre Party at the Olympia Hall last night, in aid of the Catholic Church Tower Fund, was a distinct success. About 120 people were present, making 30 tables. Play proceeded in animated style till a fairly late hour, when the winners were announced as follows: —Ladies, Ist Miss McKeown, 2nd Miss Healy; gents, Ist Mr F. Hagan, 2nd Mr D. McGregor.
