Dr A. W. Izard, f who unsuccessfully contested Wellington North seat at the General Election, will leave Auckland on December 31 for Tonga, where he has accepted a three-years' appointment as chief medical officer to the King of Tonga. The Temuka Leader hears that Dr John Kirk, of the Canton Village Mission, son of the author of Kirk's Papers on Health, will be one of the guests at the Summer School to be held in Temuka at Christmas time. His presence should be most enjoyable, as he is said to be a host in himself at such gatherings. The Rev. Ernest Graham Guthrie, who has for the past four years -been pastor of the Frist Church in Burlington, Vermont, U.S.A», is on his way to New Zealand for a trip, having been granted seven months leave of absence, 'Most of his time in the Dominion, writes our London correspondent, will be spent at the home of his father, Mr Henry Guthrie,of Dunedin. Rev. E, G. Guthrie is a brother of Mr C. H. Guthrie, of Wairaate. Mrs J. G. Fraser, an old and respected resident of Poverty Bay, died on Tuesday. She arrived at Gisborne over forty years ago, and took a prominent part in defending Tolago Bay, when Te Kooti descended on that settlement, and is indeed regarded as one of the heroines of the raid. Colonel Porter, in his book, says that Mrs Fraser did Spartan duty in arming herself with a gun, and doing everything possible to instil a spirit of courageous defence into the defenders until relief arrived.
News has been received that the Rev. Father Charles Venning was killed by a motor cycle accident in Wellington yesterday. The machine lie was riding dashed into a fence, and he sustained concussion of the brain. Deceased, who was a promising member of the priesthood, was a Timaru boy-a brother of Miss Venning, A.T.G.L., who visits Waimate as representative of the Birley College of Music. Abrother, Rev. Father Augustus Venning, is in the College at Wellington, and another sister is in (he Convent there.
On Wednesday evening last, Miss Scott who has been in the employ of Messrs Meyers and Jones for the past seven years, but has lately severed her connection with the firm, was the recipient of two very nice presentations. Mr Meyers, on behalf of the proprietors, in presenting to Miss Scott a Kaiapoi rug and silver-mount-ed j.urse referred in well-chosen words to the many good qualities possessed by her, and to her honest and conscientious way of fulfilling her duties; and, while being very sorry to have to part with so capable a clerk, he wished her every happiness in her future life. The employees of firm then presented Miss Scott with a handsome silver cake dish as a small token of the respect in which she was held by them. Miss Scott, in thanking one and all for their unexpected gifts, expressed the feeling that she would always look back with fond remembrances to the happy days spent at Messrs Meyers and Jones’.
