Is there Poverty in Ashburton.
A Convincing Statement. TO TUB BUITOB. Sir,—Your article under the heading ‘ Is there any Poverty in Ashburton ? ' I have read in your issue on Saturday, July 8, and feel called upon, as president of the Ashburton Dorcas Society, to point out that those reverend gentlemen who said the society had their cupboards full io bursting with garments and no applicants for them are misinformed. During iha months of May, June, and July we get more applicants than we have garments for, and if only some of those gentlemen would move mors amongst the poorer classes they would soon find many indeed who need assistance and why cases of need do not come under their notice is that the Dorcas Society relieves them. From August * 1, 1904, to July 10, 1905, 898 garments, 62 pairs of stockings, 7 pain of blankets, 3 pairs of boots, and one bag of coal have been distributed, and as people in good circumstances do not require help it shows that there are many poor and needy. Trusting that lhe above statement will prove to our subscribers that the funds annually collected are used for what they were intended and given for, —I am, etc., “HELEN FRIEDLANDER, ' President Ashburton Dorcas Society.’
