AWAITING SETTLEMENT. AUCKLAND, April 13. The Alinister for Native Affairs (Hon W. 11. Merries) in reply to a question regarding the settlement of the Native land in the Urewera Country, said that the complicated position in which he found matters in regard to the titles of eertairi lands which had hoeii purchased before he assumed office had not vet boon, unravelled. Every effort, he said, was being made to straighten out this tangle as quickly as possible with a view to the expeditious settlement o*’ the lands. The Minister added that he hopes to have matters advanced sufficiently to he able to introduce the necessary legislation in regard to the Urewera Country during the coming session. AVhen the necessary preliminaries wore disposed of about half a million aere.s oi land in this part of the island would bo available for settlement.
