WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Council was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Present.—Crs. T W Bruce (Chairman), B. Ward, C. Norman, J. A. Murdoch, T. J. McGuigan, S. J. Ferguson, T. W. Duff, A. From Hon. A. M. Myers, Minister of Defence, thanking Council for appreciative motion passed.—Deceived. From Agricultural Department, notifying that A. Meharry had withdrawn application for slaughter-house license.—Deceived. From Mines Department, granting prospecting subsidies : —Howat, Anderson and Party, Back Creek, for 500 ft tunnel at 2 s 6d per foot, 2s additional for timbering; Cass and Do Bakker, Upper Totara, £2G; Lanini and Party Callaghans, 1200 feet tunnel at 3s per foot, 2s additional for timbering; Lawson Bros. Kanieri Forks, 500 feet tunnel at 5s per foot.—Received. From same, declining subsidy to W. Holley and Party, South Spit, operations being on private property; regretting Minister could npt see his way to arrange for lectures at Schools of Mines.—Received. From Public Works Department, offering £ for £ subsidy on £l5O for protection at Arahura river.—Received. Chinn, asking for grant of £3 to clear Duffer’s track.—Received. From J. E. Harris, forwarding rent of Wataroa ferry reserve, and stating that C. Upjohn had entered into partnership in the lease.—Received. From H. Hanrahan and Party, asking £75 extras on Goldsborough deviation contract, declining to accept £55, and stating the works were stopped pending a settlement.—Received. From R. Thompson, asking that drain at Karangarua be cleared out, and applying for employment.—Received. From Warden’s Court, Stafford, notice of application for water-race by Johansen and Party.—Received. From Roadman Thomson (Stafford), recommending conditions bn which Cook and Honey bo permitted to put in culvert, Callaghans road.—Received. From Roadman Millner, recommending. tenders be called for 500 yards of ■ rough forkings for repairs to Lower Kokatahi Road to cope with the trac-

tion engine traffic; reporting on branch track at Ruatapti.—Received. From Roadman Dale, reporting on works done in Arahura district.—Received.

From Roadman Nolan, report on district tracks south of Okarito; also branch road from Dry Creek to Lower Wataroa.—Received. It was resolved to apply for a grant of £3OO for tho Dry Creek road. From Mines Department, granting prospecting subsidy of £45 to Surgenor and Hyndman, Rimu, for tunnel

tail-race.—Received. From Postal Department, refunding £5 16s 9d on account of Rotokino telephone guarantee.—Received.

From Jas. Park, setting out the claims of . Butler Bros., Ltd., for a friendly settlement of the Papakamai road construction. —Received.

Mr. Merchant with Mr. Park were present in support and Mr. Beare was present in the interests of the Council. After hearing the deputation, it was resalved that no settlement could be arrived at and the matter be decided by the Arbitration Court. From Ross Goldfields, Ltd., notice of intention to apply for a deviation of the electric line route.—Received. From J. Graham applying’ for leave to fence on each side of Duck Creek Biidge, Kokafahi road, as the present fence directly across the stream could not be maintained.—Received.

From Inter-Wanganui Dairy Company, asking that the roads in the district be put in something like fair repair.—Received. From L. R. Gibb, notifying completion of contract, and thanking the chairman for appreciative remarks on contract.—Received. From W. H. Harris, explaining the position in respect to the maintenanceof Pakorari Post and Telephone office.' —Received. The chairman said he was under the impression that Mr. Harris had left Pakorari and he would be pleased to make further representations to the Postal Department in the matter.

From J. F. Bergmann, applying for prospecting subsidy to drive a tunnel of 1000 feet at Lang’s Terrace, at the fool of Mt. Graham.—Received and recommended for consideration. From J. D. McQuilkin and party, asking aid to drive a tunnel of 400 feet i at Blue Spur.—Received and recommended for consideration. From J. Hcwer ; applying for a £ | for £ subsidy on an expenditure of £3OO to prospect the beaches north of Okarito.—Received and to be recommended. From W. Martyn and party, applying for subsidy to drive a prospecting tunnel at Finn’s Terrace, Blue Spur.— Received and to be recommended. From L. Singer and party, asking aid to prospect Brennan’s Creek, Blue Spur district.—Received and to be recommended. From Roadmen, further reports in reference to the condition of roads and bridges in their respective districts. It was resolved to ask the users of the traction engine plying on the Lower Kokatahi Road to increase the width of the ty •es on their conveyance to six inches. From J. Hutchison and J. Hewer, asking for rebates of rent in connection with claims at Wilberforce.—Received. It was resolved to favour the latter’s request for the reason that he intended to surrender his claim, and the former’s application was held over pending a reply from the Audit Department in reference to a former refund. From Wm. Duncan, for Y. Hendc, asking for Council’s approval re transfer of ferry reserve, South Westland, to J. Minehan.—Received and approved. From Resident engineer, offering to take delivery of broken metal in various parts of the district. The Hokitika Borough Council wrote, offering 3s per cubic yard for 1000 yards of metal.—Received. A short discussion ensued. The chairman moved that the Gounod obtain an engine and a stono crusher, seconded by Cr. McGregor. The motion was put and carried. Cr. Norman, McGuigan, Clifton voting for, and Crs Ward, Murdoch, Ferguson, Duff opposing. The chairman gave his casting vote in favour of tho resolution. The Chairman moved;— “That the accounts presented for the month of May, 1912, as revised and recommended for payment amounting to £-.519 16s 5d revised by the Finance Committee be passed for payment.— Seconded by Cr. Ward and carried. The Chairman moved;— “That a vote of £3 be authorised for cleaning Duffer’s Track.”—Seconded by Cr. McGuigan and carried.

v Cr. Duff moved:—“ That the Finance Committee report at next meeting as to tho allocation of the libraries’ vote.”—Seconded by tho chairman and carried. Cr. Ward moved:—“ That the sum of £5 be authorised for raking in the One Mile Road : and £8 for repairs to Humphrey’s road.—Seconded by Or. Norman and carried. Cr. Ferguson for Cr. Grimmond mov- ’ That application be made for an 'urgent grant of £l5O for Cookl'.-Karan-garua road.”—Seconded by the chairman and carried.

Cr. Ferguson for Cr. Grimmond moved:—“ That a vote of £6 be authoiised for repairs to road and footbridge at Weheha.”—Seconded by the chairman and carried.

Cr. Ferguson for Cr. Gvimmond moved:— “That a vote of £l2 be authorised for repairs to Gillespies Bluff Track, also £l2 for the improvement of Gibb track to the mouth of the Waiho river, as recommended by • the Roadman.”— Seconded by Cr. Ward and carried, the chairman dissenting.

Moved by Cr. Clifton that £ls be expended on Back Creek road.—Seconded by the chairman and carried. Moved by Cr. Norman that the contractors for Murray’s Creek . and Lang’s Road bridge be asked to proceed with their work.—Seconded by the chairman and carried. The Council rose at 6.15 p, in.
