CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIALS.
Two statutes in honour of Captain Cook arc being raised in England. Tho first by Sir Thomas Brock, is to be placed in St. James’s Park. The second is intended for Yorkshire, Cook’s native county. Cook served bis apprenticeship at Staithcs and Whitby The first proposal was that Yorkshire should have a replica of Sir Thomas Brock’s statute, but there was some friction upon the memorial committee, and Mr., Beckett, M.P. for TVhitby, finally decided to commission Mr. Tweed to carry out a new figure of the famous navigator. Mr. Tweed is the sculptor who has just completed the equestrian statue of the Duke of TVeilington’s tomb in St. Paul’s Cathedral. The sculptor is sparing no pains, writes the London correspondent of the “Melbourne. Argus,” to secure accuracy in the details of the Cook memorial Tho navigator is to bo represented with a bundle of charts beneath bis arm, and his dividers -in band. The Sydney statue shows Cook with a telescope. For many of these details Mr Tweed is relying upon tho expert knowledge of Mrs Marriott, the Victorian lady who writes upon goographeal matters under her maiden name of Ida Lea. Cook’s log and charts are at the British Museum, and have been at Mr. Tweed’s disposal. But an unexepected difficulty has arisen in connection with the nautical instruments. No trace of the instruments used on board of the resolution can be found. The Admiralty cannot suggest where they are; Greenwich Institute does not possess them; the United Service Institute, which has so many naval and military curios, knows nothing of Cook’s effects. Tho four cases of instruments used on board the Endeavour qimo into the possession of Sir Joseph Banks. TVben bis London house was sold, these instruments were purchased by the New South Wales Government, and taken to Sydney. Mr. Tweed is, therefore, without model of the dividers which are to figure so prominently in bis statue. The sketch model for the memorial has been finished, and the woi k is expected to be completed early in the summer.
