DRASTIC PENALTIES TO BE ENFORCED.

Replying to a deputation of the Arbitration and Peace Association, protesting against the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act, the Hon. A. M. Myers stated that while holding the utmost respect for the conscientious opinions of those opposed to complsory military training, it was his duty lo see the law carried out, although the Government regretted being compelled to allow the civil law to take its course when youths failed to register. A WELLINGTON CAMP. WELLINGTON, April 8. The first encampment of the Fifth Regiment of Infantry {Wellington Battalion) is being held at Trcntham. The grand total of all ranks and companies is 692. There are 150 tents and 11 marquees for the accommodation of the truors.
MILITARY CAMPS. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.—The first regiment wont into camp for instruction at Templeton on Thursday night, 457 merer tending. The left half of the Thirteenth Regiment concludes the week’s camp at Rangiora to-day, the right-hand half camping at Greymonth. Sevcntvoight per cent of this regiment is canvas.
