FALSE PRETENCES. DARGAVILLE, August 3.—William Gordon was sentenced to twelve month’s imprisonment for obtaining money by false pretences from a solicitor by representing himself as the purchaser of .land. He had recently been sentenced at Whangarei for a similar offence, and was an old offender.

CHILD’S SUDDEN DEATH. NAPIER, , August 3.—Fred Baker, eight years of age, died at the hospital under circumstances rendering an inquest -necessary. He was playing soldiers and received a thrust from a stick in the abdomen. Next day he was taken seriously ill and removed to the hospital where he died. A post mortem revaled that death was due to peritonitis caused by a twisted bowel. The stick thrust was in no way lesponsible for death. The inquest was adjourned for further evidence.

YOUNG- MAN’S SUDDEN DEATH. NAPIER, August 2.—A young man named William Walch, son of Joseph Walch, Borough Foreman of Roads, died suddenly to-day while looking on at a football match. He was suddenlyseized with convulsions and died before reaching the hospital. An inquest will be held to-morrow afternoon.

A MAN MISSING. DARGAVILLE, August 3.—Nothing more has been heard of a missing mian, Fred Whitehouse, employed as cook on the schooner Isabella De Frame. The police investigation shows that the missing man had been taken on board twice on Monday evening in a partially intoxicated condition. At a little after ten he went ashore again with' a billy can to get more beer for supper,' but was refused lat an hotel. Since then be has not been seen, and the general impression is that in returning to the vessel, he fell into the river and was drowned. WATER SUPPLY LOAN. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3.—The Wellington city ratepayers: voted to-day on the City Council’s proposal to borrow £IOO,OOO for the duplication of the Wainui water main and the extension of the water service in the city and suburbs. Only about 5 per cent, of those qualified voted. The proposal was carried, the voting being:—For; 846; against; 749.

A NELSON INVENTION. NELSON, August 3.—A syndicate has been formed locally to exploit the invention of a local resident designed to govern the speed and prevent the racing of steamships propellers. The apparatus has been tested with satisfactory results on coastal vessels, .and is now to be placed on the market in England .and Australia.

A PRESENTATION,

PALMERSTON N., Aug. 3.—Mr William Gill, the retiring manager of the Alliance Assurance Coy. to-night received from tho Wellington district agents a presentation of an illuminated address, a case of pipes, and a handsome* tobacco pouch, and also a silver tea and coffee service, and a gold grannie chain for Mrs Gill. The presentation was made by Mr Fred. Mowlem, the oldest agent of the Company. Mr C. -R. Smith, tho new Wellington manager, was also present. A SUCCESSFUL BENEFIT.
