“A STORM IN A TEAPOT."
HOME HULE FOR IRELAND. LORD DUDLEY CRITICISED. [ iHoreiaoo— •nouvioossv ssjnta naa'j MELROURNE, March 19. Correspondence arising out of the public criticism by Mr Snowball, (Loader of the Qramgd order) of a speech delivered by Lord Dudley at the opening of the Catholic College is published. Mr Snowball, in the course of his remarks, said that Lord Dudley might have seen fit to say that he would never countenance anybody who was not in favour of giving the Irish separate rule, adding that Lord Dudley might have thought F/is 1 position as Governor General justified him in saying such things. Lord Dudley’s private secretary wrote pointing out the difference between Lord Dudley’s actual remarks —which were that he had taken no part with any organisation or body which had not for its purposes the advancement, progress and prospertiy of Ireland—and those attributed tp him. Mr Snowball, in justifying his criticism, added that it was distinctly offensive to a large section of he people for their Governor-General publicly
to throw his necessarily weighty official influence into the advocacy and encouragement of the agitation of Home Rule for Ireland. The Governor-General’s private secretary, in resuponse to this, said that Lord Dudley did not propose to discuss the desirability of either Home Rule or the Government of Ireland. He had expressed no opinion on the former. The latter he advocated when in a position to take part in a political Controversy, hut never then or now had he any sympathy with any change of Government in Ireland, which would involve, or in the slightest way lead to the separation from the Empire. The correspondence closes with a letter from Air Snowball expressing pleasure that he now perceives that Lord Dudley had no real sympathy with Ijliose who advocated Ireland’s separation from Britain.
