A TRAGIC ENDING.

INVEROARGILL, September 4.— The Government steamer Hinemoa returned from the Southern Islands on Thursday and reported that the whalers on Campbell Island had captured 17 whales since starting operations, and had £2000 worth of bone. On July 23rd, they had a boat smashed, but the accident did not result in any loss of life.

One of the whalers, Mr John Hebberly, was returning by the Hinemoa, and a sensation was caused by his dropping dead on the steamer just as she reached the wharf. He had not given any previous indication of illness, though the voyage from the Islands had been temptesttfous.
