ATTITCDE OF THE NATIONALISTS

LONDON, Sept. s.— The debate on the Budget reached a critical stage in the early hours of Friday morning. The Ministers escaped defeat in several divisions only by the Nationalists abstaining from voting. Their attitude had been, more thau critical. The Government's majority in one division was only 49. Before oue division the Chief Liberal Whip crossed the floor of the House and conferred with Mr Redmond, the Nationalist Leader.

To this' incident Mr Balfour* referred yesterday afternoon, taunting the Nationalists with selling themselves too cheaply. Many Liberals were away during the sitting on a holiday. An urgent message has been despatched with a view of securing a better attendance next week.

The Opposition stated in .the course of the debate that Mr Lloyd-George's hopes of a new scheme to extinguish a number of licenses, and the fact that none of the license holders are to be compensated is a penalty for the nonacceptance of the Licensing Bill of 1908. Sir E. Carson, with the approval of the whole of the Unionists, moves an amendment to provide for compensation upon the discontinuance of business by reason of an increase of dut-

Several London Liberal members have vainly urged on the Government that better treatment should be given to the liquor trade in London, emphasising that under the old duties the County of London pays £190,000, which under the new duties would be £800,000. LONDON, September s.— The Westminster Gazette admits that there is a growing assumption that the Lords will reject the Budget, but it is convinced "the Peers action will be reluctant owing to their not being sure of the strength of the forces for and against the Budget, the precise strength of which cannot at present be ascertained. It adds that the political "temperature is decidedly changeable, bu Lord I.ansdowne may be trusted to recommended what is the least perilous thing to do in'all the circumstances from the Unionists standpoint.
