RAPID COLONISATION.

SYDNEY, Sept. 3.— Mr Jas. Burns, of Burns and Philp, has returned from the New Hebrides. He says the outlook in the Islands at presnt is all in favour of the French. A large amount of money has been suplied by the French Government and a French Company supported by the Government, to enable the settlers to develop their holdings. Colonisation is proceeding rapidly oji the French side, while the Brit ish immigration is practically at a standstill. One reason for the increase of French is depression of trad© in New Caledonia, many leaving theve and settling in the New Hebrides. Mr Burns declares the natives are decreasing so rapidly that it seems only a matter of time before the whole race will be wiped out, and the Islands left solely to the whites. Some islands which five or six years ago had 2000 to 3000 inhabitants have now only '500- or 000.
