HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting o fthe Counci was held in the Town Hall last evening. Present— His Worship i-he Mayor, Crs Blank, Jones, Lloyd, Mocandrew, Goodrick and T. Robinson. '

MINUTES.

The minutes of the previous meetings were confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE.

The outward correspondence was approved and the inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : —

From Leslie H. Reynolds advising that the Council would be held responsible for any breach of his agreement in connection ith the water works contract. — Received. From J Mandl and Co. asking for permission to construct a *ma'l out . let to the Sewell street drain.— Permis- . sion already granted. From Irvine and Stevenson stating they con Id not agree to the terms on which the Council offered to .supply water for power purposes. Received. Cr Robinson said if the Council could derive &ny revenue from the water they should do so. He moved that the sum be reduced to £3 per annum — Seconded by Cr Macandrew an-i carried. From J Kearns and J. Morgan asking for repairs in Hoffman street, close to their residence. — Received. Referred to the public works committee with power to act. From T. E. Y. Seddon, Esq.. M.i* , enclosing a letter received from the Minister of Railways in connection with the closing of the Hokitika River bridge. Received. Consideration whs held over. From C. J. Reakes asking what steps had been taken in connection

with tiie abbatoirs. — Received.

From County Clerk enclosing* a resolution passed at last meeting of the Westland County Council in rogard to an invitation to the Mayors to visit Wellington to welcome Sir Joseph Ward on his return from the Imperial Con-

ference. — Received. No actioii taken

From Southland Timber Company stating that they were prepared to supply any timber required by the Council. — Received. From Ross Goldfields Ltd. extending an invitation to the Council to attend the opening cei'emony in connection with the Company's mine o-i the Bth inst. — Received.

Resolved that the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Trade Protection.' Association asking that a whole holiday should be declared.

From the Rimu Miners' Association asking the Council to co-opprate hi circulating a petition protesting aisii>ist the water power regulations «md that Mayors and Councillors of Westiand Boroughs and County Councils do all in their power to obtain signatures for the same.

Cr Robinson said if any expense was to be incurred it should not bo lie; ne by the Council, but by the different local bodies. He considered that expenditure could be done without.

Cr Lloyd moved that the Council should co-operate with the Association. — The matter to be left in the hands of the Mayor and the Town Clerk.

From the District Traffic Manager stating that the Department was considering the request 'of the iesidents of Hokitika and district.

Cr Lloyd moved that the Council protest against the recent alterations to the Railway time-table. — Cr Robinson seconded. — Carried.

From J H. Stapleton calling attention to the drain between RoU.eston and Hampden streets and asking that the matter should receive immediate attention. — Received.

Cr Lloyd moved that the matter be referred to the public works committee for attention. — Carried.

From same enclosing £1 for lease of reserves. — Received.

Firom. Johr^Paterson asking tho Council to call tenders for the necessary cutting in Davey street. — Received.

Cr Lloyd stated tat Mr Paterson had reasonable access to his property aud considering the amount of traffic in the locality the work was not absolutely necessary. He understood that the vicinity the value of which he wished to enhance.

Mr Jones moved that tenders be called for the work. Cr Blank seconded..

Cr Lloyd said he considered the repairs to Rolleston street were far wore necessary than those asked for.

The Mayor said the Council was there to do what they could for the people.

He suggested that tenders he called to ascertain what the" work could he done for.

Cr Goodrick said there was no reflection cast upon the public works committee but the council should overrule if necessary any* decision arrived at, as it was really a sub-committee of the Council. ffhe Mayor said that the Council had had no overdraft for over tv/o years, but he did not wish to convey the idea that there should be any extravagance. Cr Kobinson said that if the Council could cf.jry on without an overdraft

it would be better than having one.

He also spoke on the various works under progress and said Cr Lloyd was on the right track in regard to economy.

Cr Jones amendment was carried.

TREASURER'S REPORT. -

Receipts '£63 8s Payments 102 14s 4d; dr fund £102 14s 4d. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £211 13s 6d were passed for payment.

PUBLIC WORKS.

The public works committee reported re McGregor's claim and decided to make no recommendation for the claim on the Council,

Also recommending that the drain*' on thre the south side of Hampden street be piped. The pipes were on the ground for the work.

Moved by Cr Lloyd, seconded by Cr Blank that the report as a vhole be adopted.

OVERSEER'S REPORT.

The overseer reported on various works undertaken and in progress throughout the Boroughs—Received and ordered to lie on the table..

ABBATOIR COMMITTEE.

Cr Lloyd (chairman of the Abbatoir Committee) reported that at a meeting held on Monday night it was recommended that the Council rescind the whole of the resolution standing on the books of the Council in regard to the erection of the abbatoirs.

Moved by Cr Lloyd, seconded by Cr Blank, that the report be adopted. Carried. '

Cr Robinson movgd that an abbatoir committee be set up consisting of Cr Lloyd, Goodrick, N Blank, and Coulson. Carried. It was resolved to strike the usual

rate for the Borough of Hokifcika.

Tenders for the printing and publishing of the balance sheet were received from Dawes and Nightingale

and the West Coast Times.

Moved by Cr Lloyd, seconded by Cr Jones that the tender of Dawes; Nightingale and Co. be accepted.— Carried. Moved by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Lloyd that Mr John Maunder, the Borough Inspector, be appointed poundkeeper. — Carried. Cr Robinson, in accordance with the adoption of the report of the committee, gave notice to move that all resolutions standing on the books of the council in connection with the afthatoir be rescinded.

Cr Goodrick said that repairs on tho

south side of Weld street from Vealey street corner to Fitzherbert street 'corner should be effected.— The matter was held over. The Council ' then adjourned.
