HOKITIKA FGOTBALL CLUB.
A meeting of the committee of the Hokitiki Football Club was held last evening in the Acquatic Club rroms. Present : -Messrs H. L. Michel (President), A. E. Benjamin, J. Mclntosh (vice-presidents), and Frazer, Shaw, Hills, Lynch, Michel, and Mclntosh.
It was reported that a match between tho local club and the vi&itiug Nelson team would eventuate on Cass Square, on Monday September 6th. It was resolved that the' President and all members of the club should meet the visitors at the railway station on Sat-
urday night. Arrangements having been made to take the visitors to the Mahinapua Lake on Mr Mclntosh's launch.
Mr JliUs reported having .'omraunicated .with Mr O'Reilly, a member of the West Coast Rugby Union bet ore the appointment of a referee that the Presidents objected to playing under Mr O'Donnel. Continuing Mr Hills said he did not expect that the referee referred to would be chosen for the reason that he had made use of certain remarks regarding the Hokitika team.
Mr Wilson, the , secretary, reported having sent telegrams to the secretary of the union to the effect that O'Donnel was objected to as referee and the Presidents would not play under him. He had received replies stating that the union would not alter its decision.
Mr Michel said that if all that was stated was true the Presidents were perfectly justified in refusing to play under the referee appointed by the union.
It was pointed out by Mr FTiJls that the Union were justified in preventing the Hokitika players from going on to the ground on Saturday. He explained that a third of the proceeds of any match went to the Grey Trotting Club and if the match ha& not taken place after the money had been taken the money would have/ had to be j*aid to the Victoria Parlo racing authorities. Mr Hills movedl that the action of the Executive in instructing the Presidents not to play under the referee appointed by the Union be approved. Seconded by Mr Benjamin and carried.
The secretary reported having received telegrams from the New Zealand union in reply to one sent ox plaining the action of the Presidents in regard to refusing to play under Mr O'Donnel. The information contained therein was vague.
Moved by Mr Michel that the JTokitika Football Club protest against the award of the Presidents Cup to Ihe Stars until further enquiries have bopn made into the whole of the circumstan-* ces in connection with the cise. It was resolved that the secretary and Mr Fraser should attend the uieetiug of the Rugby Union to give the reason of the Presidents for refusing J;o play under Mr O'Donnel.
A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman for presiding, and tho meeting terminated.
