WELLINGTON, June 22.— 1n pursuance of the decision of the Congress of i9OO to erect a monument at Berne commemorating the foundation of the Universal Council invited competitive designs and that of Rene St. Mardeaux, a sculptor of Paris has been selected. It is described as a work of great talent and originality. The monument is shortly to be completed and will be unveiled in September, New Zealand being represented by Hon. W. Hall-Jones. SEAMAN SENTENCED. DUNEDIN, June 23.— A seaman named Nicholls got six months imprisonment for broaching cargo. PAPAROA COAL COMPANY. WELLINGTON, June. 23— At the annual meeting of the Paparoa Coal Company to-day Mr J. P. Maxwell, Chairman of Directors, said that the company was ready to put down coal and would commence to do so as soon as the Government railway was able to carry it. The coal seams were of great thickness and of uniform quality and remarkably free from impurities. Report was adopted. Messrs Duncan and H. T. Nees were relected directors. PALMERSTON SHOW. PALMERSTON NORTH,, June 28— [ The National Dairy Show awards were given to-day. In poultry the entries were not so good as last year, but the quality wag excellent. At the Dairy Conference Mr Cuddie spoke on the necsssity of pasteurisation; Mr P. B. Ashton (Chief Government Chemist) on manuring pastures; Mr F. G. Gillenders (Moumahaka) on feed for dairy cows, production, and nutritive value ; and Mr Reakes (Chief Veterinarian) spoke also on pasteurisation. Hon D. McKenzia, (Minister for Agriculture) addressed the Conference on. agriculture generally. A meeting of Ayrshire breeders selected persons qualified as judges, and the Secretary was instructed to write to the A. and P. Associotion for a list of the persons who had acted as judges, and asking that the judges selected by the meeting should be chosen at next show. PROTEST AGAINST KING COUNTRY LICENSES. PALMERSTON N., June 23. — A meeting of the rechabites in the pro-j posed new sub-district resolved: — "That this meeting expresses an indignant protest against the granting of licenses in the King country for th'o sale of alcoholic liquors, the same being a flagrant contravention of the treaty entered into with the Mapris."
