He had an excellent innings, in which he indulged in lively leg-hitting, making in his score six fourers. Two wickets were then down for 71, while the third wicket was captured without addition to the score. Wikinson succumbed in the second over by playing forward to Layer. After luncheon Hirst filled the vacant place and continued brisk, the century appearing in. 90 minutes. Hirst knocked three fourers off Cotter's first over. He did not give a chance, though he became careless after reaching his century. He batted for 195 minutes and had 19 fourers. He was dismissed by a neat catch at mid-off, the seventh wicket falling for 255, eight wickets for 270. Carter by a smart catch at the wicket accounted for Newstead. 9 wictets for 275. The innings lasted 280 minutes and the attendance was 8000.
