WELLINGTON RACES

Wellington, Jan 22

Although the morning broke dull and threatening and light rain fell up to noon the Wellington Racing Club enjoyed a fine day for tbe opening of their summer meeting. Some 6000 people were present, including Sir Joseph Wsrd, Colonel Pitt, and leading sportsmen from all parts of the Colony. The sum of £13,701 went through the machines, as against £13,937 last year. Results : —

Anniversary Handicap — Livonia 1, Rawiri 2, Becret Society 3. All started bnt Good Intent. From a bad start Rawiri and Lolab led to the turn where Livonia shot out and won easily by a length and a half. Divs £8 18s and 19s.

Ruapehu Hack Handicap — Immersion 1, Replete 2, Delight 3. Catspaw, TreDt, Waikakaho, Waitoti, St Winpfred, Whangamoana, Dauber and Torbrina also started. Won easily by a couple of lengths. Diva *3 3s and £2 19d.

Wellington Cvp — Giadsome 1, Convoy 2, Cannie Chiel 3. All started. Canteen ana Cannie Chiel cut out the running for a mile where Convoy joined issue and Canteen fell away. In the straight Gladsome came with a rattle and won easily by three or four lengths in the record time of 2min 33 3-sth sees. Divs £2 18s and £1 19s.

Wellesley Stakes — Silk Words 1, Stronghold 2, Te Whaonga 3. The only starters. Won very easily by a dozen lengths. Div £1 3s. Electric Handicap — Brave Heart 1, Bounce 2, Ostiek 3. Muiuku and Ihe Ganser also ran. Won comfortably by a length and a half. Div £3 Is 6d.

Tongariro Hack Handicap — Tercelet 1, Spou 2, Manawaru 3. All started but Waitoto. Won comfortably by two lengths. Divs £4 9a and £1 17s.

Nursery Handicap— Tessera 1, Solution 2, Novgorod 3. Won after a good race by a lengtb . Diva £2 6a 61 and £1 . Telegraph Handicap — Ballarat 1, Golden Vein 2, Pure Silver 3. All started. The first and second horses were in front all tl»e way and fought out a great battle. Ballarat gettiug home by a length. Divs £1 aud 19s.
