KANIERI NOTES.

(From an occasional Correspondent.)

Jan 4. Our 1 1 le town has been en fete for the last week, and what with picni'S, sports ) firework", and dances, the inhabitants have had their share.

On Friday evening U«t a very enjoyable soc : al was held at the Public Hall, as a wind up to the daj's fun A large number v ere present and all seemed to er joy themselves to the excellent music of Messrs Heppel and McFadyen (piano and violin), Mr W. Wr'.ght acted as M C. in his usual efficient style. On Saturday afternoon sports were held in tha street amidst a Isrge number of onlookers. A very attractive programme was gone through under tbe supervision of Mr Naylor and a strong committee, races of all kinds were given for the young people and some interesting contests were the result.

Some excitement was caused by one of the contests being a race between two elderly married ladies of Kanieri, who both noted 'fliers' and therefore some wagera were laid on the event. The distance was 200 yds. and both started scratch but after covering half the distance one of them gave in, the other lady finishing iv good style amidst cheers fiom the spectators.

In the evening a dance was held for the juveniles and was most successful, the little ones enjoying themselves to their hearts' content, the music being supplied by Messrs P McKenna and Miss McK«nna (violin and piano), assisted during the evening by Mr J. McFadyen. The dance closed at a quarter to twilve, a fitting fioale to the week's holidays.

Kanieri has been the centre for a considerable number of visitors, who, availing themsulves of tbe splendid weather have taken a look round the place. Kanieri Lake has al o come in for a large share of attr otion as loads of pleasure

seekers in all kinds of vehicles may be seen daily passing through en route for that famous di'tnct, which at the present ia an ideal place for pleasure seekers.

Mr Taminelh's mill will be starting operations some time this week, and it is veiy gratifying to see that after all the misfortune that he met with in starting, that at last by sheer pluck and perseverance, he - is able to overcome all difficulty.

It 13 rumoured that there will be another sawmill erected on the lake road, as there ia a gnat extent of timber country in that vicinity. So that our timber industry i 3 likely to become of somo importance to the dis'rict.

Tbe Kanieri Miners' Association nro assisting MiQuilkin and p*ity to drive a tunnel at Mclntyre's Gully, at the head of Blue Spur. The patty are now in about 400 ft and have met with a little gold, but it is expected that fair prospects

ill be met with at 600 ft. and if so, it will open up a considerable area of country dhuid which has never been prospected. It is to be hoped that there will be something found worth prospecting, as our mining industry requires something to give it a start as there is a large area of country in that direction which could ba worked if gold were discovered.
