CRICKET.
Dunedin, Dec 27. The Oamaru 2nd, playing against Opoho 2nd, were defeated by 146 runs; and against Dunedin 2nd, were defeated by 69 runs. Napier, Dec. 27. Saturday was blazing hot, .the thermometer registered 90 in the shade. The only event was th commencement of the cricket match Taranaki v. Hawkes Bay. The hoaie team went to the wickets, compiling 334 runs. Wolstenholme contributed 103 by splendid cricket. Nelson and Marshall made 49 and 47 respectively. To-day there was a strange contrast, the weather being almost wintry, the raiu beginning early. The sports gathering at Plumpton Park was postponed Hll New Year's Day. An attempt was made to finish the cricket match but had to be stopped twice through the rain. Taranaki completed the first innings making 124 runs. M'Carthy 27. This involved a follow-on, when the visitor's made 172, M'Carthy making 52 of that total. Heenan 24. Hawkes Bay thus won by an innings aud 37 runs. Auckland, Dec. 27. At the interprovincial cricket match, Canterbury v. Auckland, Canterbury's first innings reached 182. The principal scores were — Sims, 51 ; Wigley, 37 ; Cobcrof t, 26 ; D. Recce, 28 ; F. Wilding, 14 ; Garrard, 12. Auckland first innings made a poor poor show for 80. S. Mills, 25, was the top score, the other double figures being Labatt, 15 ;DrPabst, 11. Canterbury in the 2nd innings lost 4 wickets for 31 runs. Nelson, Dec 27. The holidays passed off pleasantly her* 1 , a good many visitors being in Nelson. The interprovincial cricket match, Marlborough v. Nelson, was won bj the latter by 1 iunings and 12 runs to spare. Received on Dec 27 at 9.50 a.m. London, Dec 26. C. VV. Alcock, secretary of the Surrey Cricket Club, referring to the proposed visit of another cricket team to England, says the team would be welcomed in 1899. S. H.PardeD, editor of Wisden's cricketeters almanac, says nothing but good can come from the action of Phillips, the umpire, in no-balling Jones at Adelaide. The fault, he says, lies principally with English bowlers and umpires. Australians never threw in England till we had repeatedly shown them the law was broken with impunity. Melbourne, Dec 27. After the next match, which begins on Ist January, Ranjit returns to Sydney to undergo another operation to his tonsils and then rests for a fortnight. Adelaide, Dec 27. Giffeu had an offer from the promoters of the English cricketing team. He considers it satisfactory but will not play in the test match at Melbourne owing to being out of practice. He will go into active training for the other test matches and play in the match against New South Wales. (Received Dec 28, at 12.45 a.m.) Melbourne, Dec 27. The cricket match, N.S.W. v. Victoria, began to-day. The latter batted first and lost 7 wickets for 276. Worrall, 49 ; Giller, 45 : Graham, 52 ; Trumble, 40 ; M'Michael (not out) 28, were the chief scorers.
