HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL
Tuesday, Dec. 15th.
The Council met at 7.40 pjn. Present — Councillors Wade (chair), Thompson. Heinz, Northcroft, Dee and Eisf elder.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and the outward correspondence approved.
Inwabd Corkesponuence,
From J. Mandl, Mayor, apologising for his unavoidable absence — Received.
From J. J. Breeae, thanking the Coun cil for electing him on the Hospital Trus teea — Received.
From Secretary Westlani Institute, asking for alterations to the sashes—Received—Referred to the Public Works Committee to act.
From Goldmining League, inviting the Council to appoint a representative to the Mining Council — Received. — Mr Northcroft moved that Mr P. Dee be appointed. — Seconded by Mr Thrw m p SOn p ro f ormU} who did not understand the matter. (Mr Clarke here took his seat). The letter was again read. — Mr Eisfelder wanted to know if there was any liability. — Mr Northcroft said there was no liability. He detailed the reason for forming the Council — Motion carried.
From A. Heron, Secretary, Cycling Club, asking for the use of Cass Square on Deer. 26 and 28. — Received, request granted.
MISCELLANEOUS.
From Treasurer, reporting — Receips, 10s 7d ; payments, £177 12s 11 ;Bank overdraft, £1907 la 10d.— Received.
From Finance Committee as follows :—: — I have the honor to report that the Finance Committee met and examined the accounts as per schedule annexed amounting to £142 7s 2d and which they recommend be paid. Your Committee deemed it advisable aa the Council meeting was so close at hand to refer the tenders for renting the reserves to the Council to deal with.
Your Committee regret to have to report that although demands for payment have been made on all ratepayers owing previous years rates it has not had the dpsired effect and the Committee would recommend that imperative instructions uu now given to the Town Clerk to take immediate proceedings in the Magistrate's ( ' mrt for the. recovery of all arrears of fates
— Received. — Considered clause by clause land adopted after discussion in which it was elicited that the Council had lost £40 last year in subsidy through not having collected all the outstanding rates.
TENDERS.
The following tenders for leasing Borough reserves were received : —Section 585, J. M. Aitken, £1 10s; J. Mandl £2. The tender of J. Mandl was accepted.
Section 473, F. Foster, 10s— Accepted
Section 445 (Botanical Gardens), W. C. J. Kortegast, £6 ; B. Do«ell, ; J. Davis, £5 ; P. Jones, £5 or £3 with improvements ; J. Park, £10. — After discussion Mr Park's tender was accepted on the motion of Mr Northcroft, au amendment by Mr Thompson that the tender of. P. Jones (£3) being negatived, Councillors Thompson, Eisfelder and Dee voting in favor. The Council then adjourned.
