Addressing the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court this morning Mr Justice Prendergast made only a brief and colorless reference to the Kirby case. With regard to the charge against Bassett he said the Grand Jury should bring in a true bill if they were satisfied he knew of the offence with which Kirby was charged. Referring to the charge o1 criminal,libel against Cassidy, manager, and Ashbolt| publisher of the N.Z. Times, ho said if the jury were satisfied the para graph was defamatory and that accused were responsible for its appearance they should return a true bill. Hi 9 Honor made no allusion in the other cases on the calendar.
The Grand Jury returned true bills against Kirby and Bassett and against the manager and printer of the N.Z. Times for criminal iibel on Kirby and in all cases on the calendar except T. J. Donnelly, stealing from the person. William Welsh, alia* Harry Tomkinson. was sentenced to 15 mouths' hard labor, for receiving property knowing it to be stolen. ArcKLAND, Aug. 3.
Andrew Nolan, a miner lately of Coromandel, poisoned himself with Btrychnint at the Thames hotel.
At the inquest on Andrew Nolan, miner, who committed suicide by taking strychnine yesterday, a verdict, nffrfo dc se was returned. A aix roomed residence of Richard
Hodge, cabinet maker, Vincent Lane, was burned down this morning. Nothing was saved. The house was insured for £70 in the South British, furniture £100 in the North German.
Constable Donovan received a telegram from Kuaotunu to the effect that the missing man named Richard Gillett had turned up there.
A middle aged man named James was found on Sunday morning lying dead under the verandah of Dick Bro's store, Waihi. Andrew Ing-am and Alfred Dyer, tramway employees, were committed for tri il for robbery of a pocket book containing £27 which a passenger had dropped ie the car. The purse was picked up by Dyer, but instead of reporting it to the office he divided the money with the driver although he knew he was seen by another passenger to pick up the purse. The loss of the purse was advertised but accused took no notice of that.
