An, extraordinary stpiy has reached here through ,-v source which canj not be doubted in relation to a parcel of gold from Western Australia forwarded to the Melbourne mint. The parcel w.eighedi 400 ozs. The assay by the miht autho- | rities showed the actual quantities of gold § contained averaged half a dwt per oz, or S ten ozs altogether, the remaining ozs of the j parcel consisted of iron. The supposed | value of the parcel was £1640 but the | actual value proved to bo only £40.
