London, July 28. Attendance at the Oval to-day was large and the weather fine.
The Australians made'a bad start losing four wickets for a small number of runs and it was not till Gregory joined Darling that a stand was made.
The score at present is :—lredale,: — Iredale, 2; Donnan, 18 ; Giffen, 11 ; Trott, 8 ; Darling, 51 ; Gregory (not out) 52 ; Hill (not out) 7 ; extras 3. Total tor five wickets 152.
The Australians, despite their bad start put up the fine total of 367 — Gregory, 60; Hill, (not out) 118; Trumble, 22; Kelly, 44; Jones, 23; M'Kibbiu 5 ; extras 5.
Hay ward took five wickets fcr 112, and Richardson three for 124.' When fixe stumps were drawn for the day Surrey had lost two wickets for 12.
Darling hit 7 fours. Gregory, who gave one chance, registered one hit for 9 (four of which for overthrow) 1 five and 7 fours. Hill and Kelly knocked up, 9,5 in 80 minutes, tjhe f orrn.flr batted three hours and had one hit for 8, including 2 for overthrow arid 16' fours. The Surrey wickets fell in the last hour an hour owing to me bad light.
