TH3 POULTRY SHOW.

Thjs long looked for eyeijt was opened yesterday. The weather did not prove so favorable as the Committee expedted, and it is obvious their arrangements in this respect were' not so complete as ai former shows. The day was cotd and threatening and during the afternoon steady showery made their influence felt, and probably w^e instrumental in preventing several intending spectators from going. With this exception no fault could be found with the Committee. They worked systematically and thoroughly, and everything went smoothly. The Drill Shed was devoted to the poultry — fowls, ducks and geese — whilst pigeons, canaries and other birds were exhibited in the To wn Hall as well as the Miscellaneous class, which was not large, and the photographs, of which there were very few, it is singular, ' notwithstanding the fact' of "the presence of a Camera Club in our midst, that scarcely any thought it worth while to send photographs of birds or animals. As compared with others held here the show exhibited a very distinct [advance, especK ally in the number of exhibits, evincing the rapidly increasing' interest in this pleasant occupation.

Amongst the attractions in the Town Hall was a symphony organ, just received by the sole agents for Westland, Messrs Johnston and po., from the American manufacturers, Messrs White and Wilcox. It is their latest novelty in musical instruments and is a combination of the mechanical and practical. It may be played in the usual way, or by a process peculiarly simple to itself. The mechanical method attracts the interest, bemsr

simplicity itself. The music is supplied on perforated rolls, with marks, as to time, expression etc. The rolls are simply fixed in the centre of the instrument, and then by a regulation ;of the si!ops, as directed on each roll, and peeping thp organ full of wind, the desired result is achieved. In this way the most difficult music may be produced iv a manner creditable to the most skilled organist after weeks of practice. Operatic airs, choice selections, 'or the most simple ajra or sacred music, may bo produced at will with the most telling effect. It is a marvel in iis way and is quite a feature of the Exhibition.

Punctually at 3 o'clock His Worship the Mayor (Mr Mandlj ascended the platform for the purpose of opening the show. He said that since its inception, two years ago, the Society had held five shows — three] flowers and two poultry — each of which seemed to be "an improvement on its predecessor. This was particularly the case ' with the Poultry Show. Last year they had only 190 exhibits, whilst on the present occasion the number had increased to 320. This was very gratifying and reflected very great credit on both Committees, who had worked hard to produce so satisfactory a result. He believed they would still continue improving although the present result had exceeded their most sanguine expectations. He had much pleasure in declaring the Show open.

Those present then dispersed themselves around the halls, the quality of the exhibits evoking general admiration.
