"Wellington, June 4. At the Supreme Court, J. Pearson, 12 years of age, for theft at Palmerston North, was admitted to probation for 6 months. A young man named B. M'Kenzie received 12 months hard labor for stealing a coat atMasterton. He escaped from the prison gang at Fort Halswell in January last, and while at large in the "Wairarapa district committed the offence. P. O'Donnell, with previous convictions against him at Greymouth* and
CJhniatchurch, was sentenced to 6 months
hard labor for false pretences. C. Suther- , land, 24- years of age, who had been act- ■• ing as canvasser for a local firm of j| printers, received 6 months for false pretengea, The Chief Justice held the
prisoner was too old to obtain any benefit from the Probation Act, and besides his late employers did not give him a good character. Frederick Maryott, on a charge of theft of jewtjllery from the Masonic Hotel, was remanded for sentence. Thos. Johnston was convicted of forging an endorsement to a cheque for £2 Hia Honor remarked the prisoner * had been continually in gaol since 1884- and had evidently made up his mind to live by swindling. Charles Robinson was found guilty ot receiving valuables stolen from the Museum, knowing them to he stolen, and was sentenced to 2 years hard labor. George Sandbrook and Patrick Stanton, charged with assault and robbery atMasterton, were acquitted. Dunedin, June 4.
At the Supreme Court, in the cane of the young man Jeremiah O'Brien, charged with rape, the jury returned a verdict of ' not guilty ' on the ground of consent.
