Major-General Edwards has arrived. Referring to federation he held it must come. The tariff question was serious, and unless federation was instituted it was not impossible that it would lead to civil war. He favors the inter" colonial freetrade idea. Responsible Government for Western Australia was absurd, and he had reported strongly on the subject to the Home Govern, ment. Federation would settle the difficulty by takiog over the whole territory.

The well known jockey, Frank Smith, was arrested for murdering the man found stabbed to death at Surrey Hills last week. Paxton, the accomplice, was also arrested. Brisbane, Nov. 22.

General Edwards repudiates the opinion ascribed to him re Western Australia and says he stated if tbat colony was granted responsible Government at the present timo it might creato a fresh difficulty in the way of federation.
