Wellington, Nov. 21,
A public meeting was held this evening in connection with the establishment of a free public library. It was largely attended, and the Mayor presided. Amongst the speakers were Judge Rich* mond, H, D. Bell, Chapman and other prominent citizens. Eesolutions affirming the desirableness of establishing a free library and approving of the action of the City Council in setting; apart land for a site for tbe proposed building, and ap« pointing a working committee, were unanimously carried.
Tt is stated the Governor of Tahiti visits here on his way to Paris, to inter* view the Premier on tbe promotion of commercial leldtiojs between Tahiti aad New Zealaud. Government, however, have received no official intimation.
Captain liussell leaves on Sunday for Dunedin, to be present at the opening of the Exhibition. Owing to tbe absence of the Minister of Lands and Education it is doubtful wbo will accompany the Colonial Secretary, but probably Messrs Fergus and Mitchelson will go. It is believed the Premier's health will interfere with hid being present.

Information has been received that an armed man has been seen in the Burnham district. He called on the poundkeeper at Greendale on Tuesday, aad demanded food for himself and horse, threatening to shoot if not supplied. In the evening he was seen at Haldon, It is supposed he

The Standine Committee of the Ang'i« can Church met to-day to consider the question a§ to tbe election of Bishop Hadfield as Primate. Bishop Cowie, Sir F. Whitaker and Mr E. Hesketh were present. The meeting adjonrnel until Monday, no decision being arrived at.
Nomination for a representative of Waipa, in the House of Repreeen'ativep, was received to-day at Hamilton. Job a Bryce was the only person proposed and he was declared elected.
Considerable excitement prevailed at Whangarei in consequence of thi result of the trial crushing of silver ore from Pubipubi. The first ton yielded 764 ounces. The silver is said to be easily extrae'ed.
