It appears that Weaver, who committed murder ou the schooner Colonist in the islands, before he left Sydney, endeavored to induce a medical friend residing in New South Wales to visit the islands with him. He related an extraordinary tale of hidden wealth in a Pacific islaud known only to liim-elf The doctor was oiuch impressed when Weaver fitted the Colonist and sailed. The vessel cleared ostensibly for Christmas Island with no cargo, only a quantity of spades, firearms, and a splendid new whale boat. It Lad no chart on board showing Christmas Island, Weaver took all the sights only he knew where tbe vessel wa9 goiog, He put into Havannah fjr provisions. He visited H,M.S. Lizard and boasted that the clearance was fictitious. Ho repeated tales of the wealth. The officers being suspicious kept watch on the Colonist. After tbe murder Weaver said he had no knowledge of the crime.
