PBOJEOTSD DEPABTUEEB. Kennedy, for northern ports, this day. VESSELS IN POET. Kennedy. The Waipara arrived yesterday from her southern trip, and sailed immediately for Greymouth, from which port she is due today. The Kennedy arrived yesterday at noon from northern ports, with a number of passengers,. She is announced to sail again to* day at 11 a.m. The Aorere is expected to arrive from Greymoulh to-day. With reference to a statement clipped from a Wellington paper recently to the effect that the Rotomaliana would shortly be sent Home for alterations, we (Otago Daily Times) find on inquiry that there is no truth whatever in this report. The Eotomahana has always been a favorite steamer with the public, and she is likely to be a useful boat in the Australian trade' for some time to come. The Union Company have, however, in contemplation several very important additions to their fleet. It was mentioned some months ago tbat they had on hand a vessel for the Calcutta trade to relieve the Tekapo, aad also one for the Mel-bourne-Fiji trade to relieve the Pukaki and the Hauroto, which have been variously employed in this trade. These arrangements have been carried out, and the two veasels in question are expected to arrive in the colony about May next. The company anticipate therefore, having more than sufficient tonnage to overtake any possible spurt in the produce trade to Australia next season. These will be plain vessels, more of the oargo type, and willbe of about 2000 and 4000 tons respectively; but we learn that the company have also decided to add two large passenger and cargo steamers to their fleet. These are to be 330 ft long, by 42ft beam, somewhat larger than the Mararoa, but arranged more after the American plan, with their ac- , commpdation on the upper deck, thus secoring the maximum capacity for both passengers and cargo. They will be up to the company's best standard in speed, accommodation and general equipment. One is expected to be out in time for next season, and the other will follow after an interval of three or four months. The company, it will be seen, have confidence in the growth of the colony's trade, and are determined to maintain their reputation for keeping well ahead of its requirements.
