CRICKET MATCH.
The Ross— Hokitika cricket match was played on Cass Square on Saturday last. Tbe weatber was perfect, and a capital pitch was provided . Tbe fielding ground however, was in a bad state, being covered with long grass and rushes. Mr Tarleton was elected captain of the home team whilst Mr J. C. Macfarlone " bossed" the visitors, The ton was won by the visitors who gent their opponents to tbe wickets, facing tbe bowling of Macfarlane and Winchester (junior.) The innings closed for a score of 46, James Lynch contributing 12 of that number. Tbe visitors in their innings could only ran up a score of 24, the wickets being equally divided between the home bowlers Wade and Houston, who were bowling capitally. Macfarlane and C. Maude, the latter a very dangerous man, were top scores with 11 and 6 respectively. Tbe home team in their second|lnnings compiled 40, Tarleton playing a steady game for 9. Tbe score at this point stood thus— Hokitika, 86 ; Ross, 24; and it looked a moral for the home team more especially after the poor stand made by Ibe visitors in their first innings. However, when J, Jones, of Boss, got hold of the bowl* ing and knocked it about in all directions for a fine score of 32, things assumed a very different aspect. Wade and Houston, who had bowled together during the afternoon for the home team, were separated. Ralkes, Harrep and Lynch were called into requisition, all their efforts, howeveT, were unavailing, the visitors winning the match by four wickets, Lookington and Hodgson being the not out men. Messrs W. Fendall and J. Roberts acted as umpires for Hokitika and Ross, respectively. The match taken from a cricket point of view, was poor. The fielding, with one or two exceptions, was bad, catches being missed right and left, Jones, the Rosa top scorer, being missed four times ; the bowling was the beßt feature of the day ; the batting, with a few exception?, was stiff and stilted, the , evident result of want of practice.
