FOOTBALL.

Favored by such good weather there should have been a much larger muster of players on Cass Square Ust Saturday, especially as members have but a short time to prepare to meet the Grey men. The play exhibited was good but nothing like what was shown earlier in the season; some good passing between Kidd, Shermam and Coltman ia the second spell was well applauded. The tackling of some of the players was too high while others collared neatly. Coltman, haying won the toss, decided to kick off, the Captain electing to defend the southern goal. The play for the first twenty minutes was confined to the Captain's twentyafive, their opponents belne too heavy in the forwards, but the backs played a good defensive game, and succeeded in getting on Coltman's goal where some smart work was shown, Murdoch securing a touch down. Smith took the try at goal, the ball falling under the bar. No further score was gained by either side at the call of time.

In the second spell, after a succession of good tushes and some capital passing the ball was close on the Captain's goal line. Some splendid play on both sides ensued, the ball being gradually worked away from its dangerous locality, all the Captain's forwards playing remarkably well agaioßt the weight; but Coltman's side waß equally active, and the ball hovered unpleasantly near the goal, Coltman getting over. The kick waa, however, a failure, and with the score equal some ibarp work was displayed by both aides, but the Captain's side playing a faster game kept the ball in their opponent's twenty-five. Andrews, running round, touched down between the posts. Smith took the kick, bat the ball rolling itruck the chargers. Coltman kicked out, Churches returning well up the touch-line some good scrimaging work occurred, Holmes passing quickly to Andrews, but he waa too well watched. Smith cot the ball over the line, and boob after Foreman and Holmes, iushing the ball down, got over but lost possession, Andrews backing tbem up, however, scored the try. The game ended in a win for the Captain's side by four points to Messrs C. EmeTson and D. J. Evans acted as umpires. The forwards all played a hard game, Aitken, J. Emerson, Forenun, Holmes and Murdock working very hard.
