The report of Major Keddell, Commis- j sioner appointed to inquire into the cause of the accident in the Wallsend mine, Is to hand. He says the primary cauae of the accident was the faulty manner in whioh James Dunn drilled the hole and prepaied the shot, before requesting the overman to fire It. He drilled the hole with a drill of which one corner was off making the hole too small for the usual cartridge. He tamped the shot with coal dust, and did not pay sufficient atten tion to the cleavage of the coal at tbe face. The overman was responsible for not having examined the shot properly* taking Dunn's statement for granted" He has no doubt that it was not so purely a gas explosion as many miners stated in their evidence, and is of opinion thai tbe . management of the Wallsend mine had been lax. Sufficient precautions have not been taken to secure the safety of the men working in it considering it has been notoriously subject to appearances of gas in all working places, and instances are given from evidence such as firing shots with naked light, clearing gas in "places" while men are in adjoining workings, tamping shots with coal dust neglect of deputies to enter in the report book all instances of gas ignition, and want ef care in inspecting and cleaning the safety lamps. Major Keddell makes several suggestions : Shots to be fired by heated wire touch paper, gas should not be cleared out of "places" till the men are out of the mine. He recommends the substition of other explosives such as some nitro-glycerine, compound of tbe lime cartridge. Tbe report book is useless as some of the most important entries are interlienations. He strongly urges the proprietors to procure better lamps for their under-viewers, and firemen and all who have to try for gas. Considers the Davy lamp out of date, and think 5 Living's gas indicator would be a valuable assistance to to the manager of the mine. William Lawn, the infant clild ot Thomas Lawn, was accidently drowned by falling down the water closet at itt> father's residence ; it was quite dead when recovered. An inquest will be held to" morrow. The . Mawhera takes 59750za gold .for transhipment at Wellington.

The weather is quite mild and springlike.
