London, Feb. 7.
The creditors of the Commercial Bank of South Australia will be paid in full. Messrs Henry Ball & Co. have purchased the London assets, and Messrs Wilson and Co. the Sydney assets, for £75,000. Colonial creditors will be paid in full ; English creditors will receive 13s in the£.
A million of the Victorian loan has been paid.
A large shipment of Scotch and Rhine salmon ova and Rhine char carp and trout will be forwarded by the Aorangi.
Sir Arthur Blyth and Sir Saul Samuel are urging a conference of the mail companies.
Bubear beat Perkins in a sculling race at Maine easily by three lengths. A paper on colonial fruits has been read by Mr Morris at the Colonial In» stitute. In it he stated that Victorian canned fruits are equal to the best Californian, and ought to be more largely exported to England ; also that dried figs and Adelaide pears were greatly valued in the market. A large quantity of apples and grapes were grown in Perth, and the Adelaide seedless currants were equal to the best imported. New Zealand and Victorian apple 3 were also mentioned as a valuable article of export.
February 8. Count von Moltke, in reply to a deputation, assured them that the polii tical situation was most serious.
Mr John Norton had a long interview with Sir Henry Holland, "who promised that Australia should have direct representation on the Committee of the Emigration Bureau, but was unable to permit Mr Norton to attend the Operatives' Conference.
The selection of a successor to Mr Eustance, as Professor of Agriculture for South Australia, will not be made until the arrival of Mr Downer, M.L.A.
February 9. The French Chamber of Deputies bas voted 30,000,000 francs for increasing and improving the French navy.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce have re3olved to urge Mr Cecil Raikes to reduce {he rates of postage to the colonies.
Bas Aloula threatens to destoy the forts at Maßsowah, and in consequence reinforcements have been despatched there from Italy.
