DROWNED.

Wellington, June 1. A man, about 35 years of age, was drowned to day while crossing Euamahanga, at Te Whiti, in a canoo. A Wellington pawn ticket was found on him with the name of Richard Cole on ir. The following resolutions were carried : —Moved by Macandrew, " Tbat this meeting deeply regret*) the delay that has taken place in tbe construction of tbe Otago Centra l Railway, and is <f opinion that in the public intemt a much larger amount tban tbat propos:d, viz., £200,000, should be applied to the work at the one time, seeing that there may be difficulty in the tray of extending the amount ; in the mean'ime, itis resolved tbat a deputation be appointed to wait upon tbe Government with the view of receiving an assurance that the future cons'ruclion of tbe line should be so regulated that contrac's for construction at iea i t ss far as the T<t'eri Lake shall be entered into aid finished within 18 months of tbe date of negotiation of loan, the deputation to consist tf Messrs PyKe, Barren, Fe r gus, Gore, and tbe mover." Mr O. F. Richardron moved, " That this meeting Is of opinion that the present unfinished railways should be carried to a reproductive point prior to tbe commencement of any new railway?."
