I\F iRMATION F.<()M COLONIAL I BEOR*ITARy, WESTR N AUPT 8 ALIA. Wsixwgtok. June 1. Tbe Premier has reci-'ed i csble message from Mr M P. Smith, Acing rr o ?oniai Secretary of Western Australia, dated Perth, May SI. The following ig the cornmuniottion sent by direction of Governor, Sir Frederick Broome, for the information of the N.Z. Government: — ' Ihe field las b en proclaimed in Kimberley district. There is every reaeon ta believe it Kill be extensive. About two thousand ounces of gold have been already obtained. Mount Barrett ii about the oentre of tbe field. The distance from Derby is about three huudred and fifty mi'es, and from Wyndham about three hundred miles. The former is at present a better route. There are indications of gold about one hundred and fifty milea from Derby. Drays can travel without great difficulty for about 300 mile?, then pack horses have to be used for tbe remainder of the dist »nee. So far 6s can be gathered there is not a large number of miners at the diggings at present, but more tban one thousand men are stated to be on their way there. It is most essential to avoid hardship and risk, that parties proposing to go to the d ggings should be well equipped with drays, boras, and tents, and should take provmins to la-t th(m for &everrl month*. No" thing can at present be obtained except at Derby and Wyndliam. It is recommended to all parties coining to. bring their own supplies drays nnd horses, We are awaiting the report of the police party that left Derby fur the diggings on the 10th inst. A Warden has been appointed, and proceeds shortly with an escort to the goldfield. Vaiious works are being undertaken in Derby to facilitate the passage of vessels to Port Derby, and landing and storing of goods. The passage from the point to Port Derby is being properly buoyed. A jetty added to a tramway constructed from the jetty to the town of Derby, and a large bonded store are constructed. An engineer has been sent to Dorby to superintend these works and lo expedite matters. An additional force of workmen is being despatched there ; the town site of Wyndham, Cambridge Gulf, has been selected. A Government resident and police party are establ shed at Wyndham, and a survey party ia also at woik in the district. At present, from what we lrarn, it would bo easier for parties to go to Derby. Pica c publish th s information."
