SILK INDUSTRY.

The Colonial Treasurer is instituting inquiries if the silkworm industry can be eairied out in the colony with advantage. Many years ago a large quantity of mulberry trees were introduced and distributed in different parts of the colony. Some of them have nourished exceedingly we'l. A tree in Wellington, which after three years has just begun to bear, has leaves of an enormous size. The silkworm industry can only be first established as what is known as an amateur industry ; that is, it would not pay with labour at a high rate of wages, but it can bo carried on by women and children during intervals of leisure. The occupation is so interesting that children would delight in it ; besides, it would be the means of earning many pounds a year to add to their parents' stores. At present the question is, are there mulberry trees sufficient to warrant the introd uction of the eggs.
