PUBLIC FILING IN BURMAH.
Writ'g abouc the 'feeling existing in Burn>ah consequent upon the deposition of King Theebaw, the Rangoon correspondent of the Times of India gays: — "&i>im<se affairs a r e incomprehensible nnt'l ont 1 gr>.gps tne fact that Burmah is not the country of the Burmese alone, or even cbitfly ; and that in all the races of the land tbe feeling towards the royal house 's not so much one of loyal devotion as a belief in the supernatural powers of the man who h clever enough to gain tbe throne. Loyal devotion to the bouse of Alompra would have effectually barred Theebaw's accession, as probably not one Barman in tea. believes him to htve Alompra'e blood in his veins at all. He is the son, they ray, of one of tbe late king's wires by her paramour, but once he got on the throne that origin seemed no objection to his staving there. The idea seems to be that the man whom fate exalts to the throne of Burmah must hare been a man of transcendent merit in some previous existence, and that his former merits will suffice to keep him there whatever may be bis demerits in this existence, and whatever earthly combination may be made to put him down. This idea helps to prevent any internal revolts against a Burmese Sing, but once fate has put downTheebaw by means of British troops the Burmese, will have no difficulty in accepting the situation. Such a putting down proves that his merits in his preceding existence were not so great asnad been supposed."
