AUSTRALIANS V. THE PLAYERS
OF ENGLAND.
London, June 30.
The Australians commenced a match to-day at Sheffield, against eleven players. The following are the names of the latter: — Barlow, Bates, Brigge, Emmett, Grimshaw, Hall, Hearne, Peate, Read, Sherwin, and Ulyett. There was an enormous attendance of spectators and fine weather, an excellent wicket had been prepared, and the ground was in first rate order.
The home team went in first and were all disposed of for a total of 230. The highest scorers were Bates, b, 11; Barlow, b, 47; Ulyett, b, 76; Hall, c, 16; Read, b, 31; Briggs, b, 13; Emmett, not out, 11.
The Australians in their first innings lost three wickets for 65, when the stumps were drawrjj Murdoch, not out, 25 and Giffen, stumped, 31, were the highest scorers. July 1. The cricket matck at Sheffield, Australians v. Players of England was resumed to-day in the presence of an enormous number of. spectators and with fine weather.
The Australians having three wickets down for 65 runs, continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 189* The principal scorers were Murdoch, b, 25 j Bonnor, c, 70 j and Palmer, not out, 28.
The home team then commenced their second innings, and scored 87 runs with two wickets down, before play ceased for tbe day. Barlow was caught for 28, Hall, for 59.
Tbe wicket to-day was rather bumpy, and Blackham was hurt during the game and compelled to retire.
