ANOTHER DEFAULTING TOWIS CLERK.
Chbistchuech, January 13.
At a special meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council this morning, the Finance Committee, who have been making a special audit of the municipal accounts, reported that three eels of rate books and the balance-sheets for the year 1877, were al missin,?, and thac they could not complete their work as the books and papers of the Council were ia a most disgraceful state. When they found that state of things in existence they had summoned the Mayor> wh'i had immediately suspended the clerk and taken charge of the office. They '.onsidered the auditors had been grossly negligent as their work had not been done. They also reported that as far as they could ascertain, there was a deficiency of a sum of £550, extending over a period of four years. It was also reported that the Town Clerk— C. E. Dudley— after being suspended by the Mayor, had sent in his resignation. The Council decided not to accept the resignation and to take proper measures under the Act, for ousting the auditors from office.
