At the Police Court this morning. Duffy, Troy, and Bowden were committed for trial for forgery.
On Saturday night a man named J. A. Ball, residing in Upper Queen street, fell down the back steps of his house ; he never recovered consciousness, and died yesterday afternoon.
George Bennett, for stealing £13 from one Shelley, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to one year's imprisonment with hard labor, to date from the time of his committal.
The Commodore and officers of the Nelson, and the officers from the warship Carola, were entertained at dinner by the Northern Club. A party of Armed Constabulary has been detailed off to repair the graves of the military and volunteers killed in the Waikats campaign. Six seamen of the whaleship Adelaide Gibbs, deserted in a boat from the Bay, but were captured off Mongonui. At tbe criminal sessions of the Supreme Court, Edward FitzGerald, larceny, 2 years; Robert Johnson, wounding with intent, and Davitt Squibb, discharged : Henry Cox, unlawfully wounding, but owing to having obtained serious injuries at the same time, imprisoned only to rising of court. True bill for murder against Winiata; no bill in case of Samuel Walker, for rape.
The Herald's Alexandra correspondent says that Parangate, father of Winiata, has become porangi mad, armed himself with a gun, and left the settlement declaring his intention of having utv, or payment by killing a Pakeha or halfcaste. Tawhiao hearing of it, has taken steps to restrain the madman.
Captain William Jackson Barry, lecturing in Waikato settlements, interviewed Tawhaio and hia chief's. He was courteously received.
The steam launch of the Nelson, picked up a boat bottom upwards. It is feared an accident has taken place, as a heavy north-easter was blowing.
