COMMERCIAL.
Messrs H. Matson and Co., of Christchurch, report on the 16th inst.,as follows:.—
The past week has been very dull and inactive, and very few transactions have taken place. Some private sales of jellow ceunterß have been effected at £30 per ton, I.B.; but the trade are reserving themselves for the sew season's crop, expected very shortly. The cargo of the Fawn, from Queensland, consisting of 200 tons assorted qualities, will be opened by us at auction on Sept. 23. The first cargo of the Mauritius sugars is expected about the end of next week, and as stocks are low we anticipate a good sale. The next shipment of new teas is also shortly expected, and will come to a good market. The inquiry for cormacks, especially for the large size, has been very considerable ; the large size are now out of stock. Grass seeds are becoming scarce, especially white clover, cow grass, and aleyke, and a further rise is expected: Money it still abundant, and satisfactory investments difficult to find. Credit is sound, and trade generally is in a healthy condition.
