The following note from an extensive and, so long as times permitted, highly-successful Scotch farmer, gires an idea of the reality and magaitude of farming losses in Britain in recent years:— "Forty -five years ago I commenced farming with barely £500, which, in the course of forty years, I converted into £40,000; but during the last five years I have lost £20,000, and if times and seasons do not change I will aoon end as I began." Governor Pope Heunessy has got himself into hot water again in Iloug Kong, by appointing a Chinese barrister to be a member of the Legislative Council of that Colonj. The London Hospital authorities were on December 27 the recipients of a splendid Christmas-box. A lady was scon to leave a letter in the box at the pirter's lodge, addressed to the secretary, which on being opened was found to contaiu £5,000. The writer left no clue to her iudentity. ! A gentleman has started a cafe just opposite a cemetery.
