WELLINGTON NEWS.
[Ty. C. TIMES' SPECIAL WIRE.']
Wellington, May 27. There has been really very little excitement over the Mayoralty contest to-day. Neither side appeared well organised, and the total number of votes polled was very small. Throughout to-day Hutcheson appeared the favorite, the result of the poll was— Hutcheson, 699 ; Hunter, 664 ; majority for Hutcheson, 35. The body found at Island Bay yesterday has been identified as that of John Dick, a carpenter, who left home a few hours hours before his body was found. The R.M. Court was occupied with the prosecution of Kinross for perjury, both cases are unfinished. A specimen of the cuttlefish, ten feet in length, has been washed ashore here. With reference to the New Plymouth disturbance, it is understood that Mr Cadershill is in communication with the government and does not consider the circumstances so critical as have been reported. Mr Parris in the absence of Major Brown is making all possible enquiries into the matter and he informs the Government that no land has been entered upon except CadershilFs paddocks. It is probable the Hinemoa will be sent to New Plymouth with stores, &c, but it is not considered necessary to send up any of the memuf'the reserve now in the depot, as.it seems to be still a moot point whether the Natives are not only asserting a proprietory right, which they mean legally to try without any intention of committing violence. The schooner Shepherdess 30 tons, Captain Bilby, Was wrecked at Kaikoura yesterday. During a heavy gale the schooner parted her mooring and was driven on the rocks when she at once commenced to break up. The vessel being built about 30 years ago, the insurance had just expired and the company had refused to renew the policy, as the vessel was at sea at the time. Mr Benden, the owner, estimates his loss at £450.
