THE HISTORY OF A CENTURY.
A correspondent of the Detroit Free Press supplies a curious record of events which has special interest at the present time. He says :— A century is not much in the life of a nation, and the following • dates may be of interest to our readers. :From this it appears England has been = alternately 'friend and foe of all the 'European Powers on the Turkish question iiu little oc r 100 years.
1740.— -Ausiria and Russia agree to v-divide Turkey. Great sea fight ; at Seio.
1770.— England and -Russia fight Turkey. -■ 1790.— Austria and Russia -fight against Turkey, and Turkey loses 200;000 men.
1798.— England joins Turkey against France, and drives the French but of Egypt.
J Bo7.— Russia joins Turkey, against England, and almost [destroys^he Knglish fltet in the . Dardanelles, under Sir John Duckworth.
1827 -—English and Russian fleet destroy the Turkish fleet at" Nava'rinb. 1828.— Russia fights Turkey, and the "'Sacred 'Standard " in tfhfurled.
1 833."— Russia enters Constantinople arid mikes an offensive and defensive alliance with Turkey. 1854.— England, France, and Turkey subdue Russia in the Crimea.
1877.— Russia defeats Turkey, and this time (so far) England looks on.
