THE MELBOURNE CUP.
Up to the time the Arawata left Melbourne there had only been one farther scratching for the Melbourne Gup, viz., Martindale, the pen also having been run through his name for the Champion Stakes. The announcement that Chester would be reserved for the big event has caused a demonstration in his favor ; while as Swivellcr will carry Mr Lloyd's colors, he promises to be supported by the public to the end of the chapter. MELBOURNE CDP.
In speaking of the cup weights " Augur " considers Woodlands to be tbe most leniently treated in the handicap. Mr De Mestre,.he says, is particularly dangerous in the Cap, but he was never more so than he is this time, and especially with Calamia, Chester, His Lordship, Vulcan, Roodee, Jasper, aud Soothsayer--^ truly formidable team, the best of which will probably be first favorite on the eventful day.
