AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbouene, May 22.
A large meeting of the unemployed was held at Melbourne on Moaday, and afterwards waited on the Hon. Graham Berry, who said that the want of employment was caused by the tactics of capitalists and monied men who were defeated at the hustings. He promised to provide temporary employment, trusting afterwards to obtain the sanction of Parliament.
Mr Francis was yesterday elected for Warnambool by a majority of HI over Croig, the Reform League candidate.
In the case against Captain King and Battersman, of the Alexandra, for attempting to scuttle that vessel, the jury, after being locked up all night, were unable to agree, and were discharged.
Farming's Lucy Free won the Leger Stakes at the coursing meeting of the Victoria Club.
Bates, the actor, suddenly disappeared on Monday night. The performance at the Princess Theatre was stopped in consequence. Nothing has been yet ascertained as to his whereabouts.
Business is very dull, and there is very little doing.

The Governor, in his speech on proroguing Parliament, congratulated the country that the estimated revenue had been fully realised.
A new land bill has been laid on the able which gives additional facilities to selectors, and will allow families to take up contiguous areas, without residence conditions, but on improved conditions.
The repairs to the steamer Chimborazo are to be completed next month at a coßt of £8000.
Adelaide, May 21. Howard Clarke, editor and principal proprietor of the Register, died on Monday. His mother was sister to Sir Rowland Hill. Parliament meets on the 31st May.
Longevity must be superlatively prevalent at present in Ireland, for a Belfast paper announces the death of a gentleman at the " comparatively early age of sixtyeight."
